Both types will put your patio in the shade. The difference is in how you live with them day to day.
Retractable awnings
A retractable awning folds back against the wall when you don't need it, and extends when you do. It's opened with a hand crank or, on a motorised model, a switch or remote.
Choose retractable if:
- you want sun on the space some of the time, say for drying, plants, or a cooler morning;
- you'd rather the front of the house looked clean when the awning isn't in use;
- you're covering a wide span and want the option to open just as much as you need.
Retractable awnings are made mainly for shade. They're pitched to shed light rain, but they should be closed in storms and strong wind.
Fixed awnings
A fixed awning stays in place on a permanent frame, with a fabric or polycarbonate cover.
Choose fixed if:
- you want shade and rain cover all day, every day, without thinking about it;
- the space is a walkway, entrance or outdoor kitchen that's used in all weather;
- you'd like something with very little to operate or maintain.
What about colour and fabric?
Both types come in a wide range of designs and colours, from solid tones to classic stripes. Lighter colours feel brighter underneath; darker colours give a deeper, cooler-looking shade. Ask us for samples to see them against your walls.
Still not sure?
Tell us how you use the space and we'll recommend one. Start with the residential awnings page, or send a few photos through the quote form.
